My 2024 R-Rated Movies at Home Ranked: First Watch Edition Part 2
I saw 56 R-rated movies for the first time at home in 2024. Here's the decent.
Welcome to the middle of the pack as I rank all of the R-rated movies I saw for the first time at home in 2024. Have you seen any of these? Let me know in the comments!
56 is a lot, so I’m breaking this up into three parts:
1. 18 Movies rated 0 - 2.5 out of 5
2. 15 Movies rated 3 - 3.5 out of 5 (YOU ARE HERE.)
3. 23 Movies rated 4 - 5 out of 5
Did you see any of these? Let me know what you thought of them. Here we go!
My 2024 R-Rated Movies at Home Ranked: First Watch Edition Part 2
Pearl (2022) 3 out of 5 Ax Swings
I was pleasantly surprised by X and this was a good follow-up, but didn’t quite live up to it for me. I didn’t get around to MaXXXine yet, any good? Ti West and Mia Goth are great, though, and I look forward to whatever comes next.
Saltburn (2023) 3 out of 5 Bad, Bad Bathtubs
This is one of those movies you hear about, then you see it, then you can’t unsee it. I’m glad I didn’t get any spoilers, and if you can get through the first 45 minutes of this weird tale of debauchery, stick it out, the ending is pretty satisfying.
Fury (2015) 3 out of 5 Uncomfortable Dinners
This is one of those movies I finally felt compelled to see after social media fed me a movie clip. You know, the kind where they don’t say the title but if you click the link below they make money somehow? Anyway, this was okay. The characters are all pretty crabby all the time, and it’s a pretty bleak movie, if that’s your thing.
South Park: The Streaming Wars Part 1 (2022) 3 out of 5 Randy’s Haircuts
I finally got around to all of the new South Park “movies” and since Paramount+ calls them “movies,” I’ll go with it. And yeah, TV-MA is not an R rating, but that’s as close as it gets. I’ll get to others that I enjoyed more later, but this satire on streaming was good.
South Park: The Streaming Wars: Part 2 (2022) 3 out of 5 Man Bear Pigs
A satisfying ending to this pair of satires on streaming platforms, Karens, and big business practices. It is such a joy to watch people say “No” to Cartman and watch him throw a fit. Good for his mom. Seriously. Good for her!
South Park: Joining the Panderverse (2023) 3 out of 5 Give Kathleen Kennedy a Break
This was decent but probably my least favorite of “the new South Park movies.” For what it’s worth, I think Kathleen Kennedy more than deserves a break and in my view, this movie pokes a lot more fun at toxic fandom than her. To which I say, good.
Men (2022) 3.5 out of 5 Slicey-Dicey Weirdness
“Sir? I have Alex Garland on the line.” “Thank you. …Alex, babe, you cooked up another script for us? …Great! Is it— Okay, sure but— Okay, but how weird?! …Got it, got it. My only question, Alex, babe, is does the guy have to be fully naked as he gives birth to himself? …Uh-huh. …Got it, that makes sense. Here’s $10 million.
Knock at the Cabin (2023) 3.5 out of 5 Prophecies Are Always Weird
There was a time when I would’ve seen this movie on opening day. That was a long time ago, sorry to say. This time, I do wish I’d gotten to this in the theater, because I ended up enjoying this quite a bit. Nice and creepy, like it should be.
Idiocracy (2005) 3.5 out of 5 Terry Crews Wigs
People have been recommending this movie to me for 20 years. You know, what with the state of the world for the last *checks watch* 20 years. As a movie, it’s clunky. As a satire, it’s wonderful. As for whether this is the predictable “not far down the road” for our timeline, look, folks: nobody said hope is easy. Nobody said it doesn’t take work. But cynical resignation? Yeah, that’s not for me. Fun movie.
Blockers (2018) 3.5 out of 5 Moms Under the Bed
This didn’t seem like the kind of movie I would be all that interested in, at this point in my life, but that’s why I enjoyed it. It’s not from the teenager perspective, but from the parent perspective, and I found myself laughing, smiling, and tearing up a bit. A good cast, and I’d watch this again.
Humanoids From the Deep (1980) 3.5 out of 5 Ventriloquist Seduction Scenes
I ended up watching a ton of so-called scary movies for the first time around Halloween and this was one of the better B-movies I saw. It reaches far beyond its production value and I’m impressed with the end result.
As I wrote in the 2024 Halloween Countdown, this is a movie that shows you exactly what it is: Within 7 minutes, the first victim is a kid. Within 10 minute the second victim is a dog. At that point, you’re either in or you’re out!
Just know that if you’re out, you’ll miss a nerdy man seduces a woman with a ventriloquism dummy, a scene that you will never forget it.
South Park: Post-COVID (2021) 3.5 out of 5 Still-Terrible Cartmans
These were the first South Park “movies” and I thought this was a thrill ride. It lambasts the recent superhero and action movie tropes while embracing them to tell a good story. Oh, and in the future, Cartman is still terrible. Shocker!
South Park: The Return of COVID (2021) 3.5 out of 5 Still-Terrible Cartmans
I can’t say why I never got around to these when they came out, but I’m glad I waited a few years. There’s something about looking back on those early COVID days with even a little distance that made me appreciate these. I’d love to hear from someone who watched them right away, though. Anyone?
Bad Moms (2016) 3.5 out of 5 Wish Fulfillments
This seemed like yet another “adults can be terrible” comedy entry around the time of others like The Hangover and Bridesmaids, but it looked like it wouldn’t be as compelling. I was wrong, because I really enjoyed this. Each of the leads brings something unique to the story, and I laughed out loud quite a bit.
A Bad Moms Christmas (2017) 3.5 out of 5 Wish Fulfillments
A good sequel with a nice, natural next step by bringing in the bad moms’ bad moms. Some of the great cast from the first movie take a back seat for this new story, but I enjoyed it all the way through. If they do a third where these bad moms become bad grandmoms, I’m all in for it! If you dismissed these two like I did for a while, try them.
Your turn!
What about you? See any of these? What did you think? Next up: the best of the R-rated movies I watched for the first time in 2024. Thankfully, it’s the longest of these three lists!
Thanks for reading, sharing, and subscribing. God’s peace and good movies to you!
I thought Maxxxine was the best of the trilogy
