January Goal Met: Watch (at least) one movie per day.
February Goal Met: Watch all 10 Best Picture nominees.
March Goal Met: Watch the final 12 Oscar nominated 2025 films I hadn’t seen yet.
April Goal Met: Watch at least 1 movie per week during a busy travel month.
May Goal Made: Watch an R-rated movie selected by each of my kids.
June Goal Met: Watch Sinners in the theater.
July Goal Made: Watch 1 movie per week.
Commentary: June was indeed just as packed as I thought it would be, but I made my simple goal: go see Sinners in the movie theater. I saw it 60 days after opening day and back in the day, that was easy to do. These days, theatrical release windows are shorter and shorter. If you don’t hit it big on opening weekend, you hit streaming in two weeks. Yikes. I… guess somebody crunched the numbers and that’s the best way to make money?!
July is also pretty busy, so my goal is to watch one movie a week. I’m pretty sure I can handle that. Famous last words, right?
And with that, let’s get to the rakings! Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
June 2025 R-Rated Movies Ranked in the order I saw them:
Sinners (2025) 4.5 out of 5 Emergency Blood Drives
FIRST WATCH | Wow, this lived up to the hype. An amazing original story with brilliant execution all around. Cast, writing, music, cinematography, production design, you name it, and it’s firing on all cylinders. I’m glad this had great legs in theaters so I could finally see it, and I’m also glad I missed out on relatively most spoilers (sure, I knew about that twist, to a degree, but not all the twists and turns that come as a result, let alone how they get there). I’d watch this one again in a heartbeat.
28 Weeks Later (2007) 3.5 out of 5
I remember seeing that opening scene in the theater and the absolute terror of it, not just from the hoarde of zombies but the impossible choice Don (Robert Carlyle) makes and the downward spiral consequences of his actions. The movie doesn’t quite live up to that promising opening, but I thought this a worthy sequel to a great movie.
I.S.S. (2023) 3 out of 5
FIRST WATCH | This movie attempts one of those most difficult of challenges when it comes to science fiction stories: take an intriguing premise and unfurl it as an intriguing story. It was there, mostly, but it didn’t quite elevate to that high-level execution. What I do like about it, however, is it has the feel of an old Twilight Zone episode, where mistrust is the main character. I probably need to give this one another chance.
One of Them Days (2025) 3.5 out of 5 Emergency Blood Drives
FIRST WATCH | I missed this in theaters, though it seemed to have lingered on the silver screen a little longer than what’s typical, these days. This was a lot of fun. The humor, story beats, and performances are all pretty broad, so if that’s not your kind of comedy, adjust your expectations so you can sit back and enjoy this one. I enjoyed how character-driven this screwball comedy is, and I’d watch more adventures of Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) if they keep making them!
Your turn!
