My 2024 R-Rated Movies at Home Ranked: Repeat Watch Edition Part 2
I saw 32 R-rated movies again at home in 2024. Here's the second half...
Last time, I wrote about 17 of the 32 R-rated movies I watched again at home in 2024, at least those I rated 3.5 to 4 out of 5. Today, I’m continuing with the 15 movies that I rated 4.5 or 5 out of 5. All of the 5s are favorites, and I recommend all of these. In fact, it turns out I’ve written about many of these at R-Rated Movie Club already, and I’ve put links in below.
What did you see last year? Next time, I’ll write about a few posts about all of my first-watch R-rated movies in 2024, which was - get ready for this - 56! For now, here are my 4.5 or 5 out of 5 repeat-watch R-rated movies of 2024…
Cabin in the Woods (2011) 4.5 out of 5
We waited a long time to finally show this to the kids and it did not disappoint. I am so glad I went into this cold in the theater and the kids went into it cold at home. Have you seen this? If not, go. In. Cold!
Inglorious Basterds (2009) 4.5 out of 5
This movie is about a lot of things but the primary thing is the absolute pit in your stomach as you watch Christoph Waltz do his thing. Scary and a half. A truly well-earned Oscar-winning performance.
Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003) 4.5 out of 5
The kids and I watched both of the Kill Bill movies in 2023 but this time around they just wanted the first. They do have different vibes, that’s true. Overall, I like the second better but the first has incredible style.
Pulp Fiction (1994) 4.5 out of 5
Cliché or not, this is the movie I watched at 15 that made me stop and say, “Whoa, something else is going on here and I want to know how that works!” It still holds up, and I tend to watch it at least once a year.
Game Night (2018) 4.5 out of 5
This is a family favorite. Here’s a review from our youngest: “Very funny. Would recommend. The best part? ‘Oh no, he died!’” There you have it, folks.
Trading Places (1983)
Though I’ve been watching this movie for 40 years, it’s still very weird to watch it uncut in the theatrical presentation instead of the “edited for television” version that I watched dozens of times as a kid. My kids watched the uncut version with dad edits, thanks to the remote control.
The Hateful Eight (2015) 4.5 out of 5
Yes, I’m a Tarantino fanboy. Deal with it. Great movie.
Scent of a Woman (1992) 4.5 out of 5
I recently made a sound that made our oldest say, “You sounded like Al Pacino just now.” I asked, “What?” She said, “You know. Hoo-ah!” Mission accomplished.
Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion (1997) 4.5 out of 5
I loved this in high school and I loved it when I was around the age of my 10-year reunion (I didn’t attend because I was getting married) and I loved this with my kids.
Wild Things (1998) 4.5 out of 5
My kids lov— Okay, yeah no, I did not show this one to my kids! I picked up the Arrow release and the presentation did not disappoint. Great movie!
Cop Land (1997) 5 out of 5
I was one of the 10 people who saw this in the movie theater and one of the 5 people still talking about it. This is Top 10 movies material, right here, folks. Love it.
Jackie Brown (1997) 5 out of 5
This is my favorite Quentin Tarantino movie. Maybe it’s because Elmore Leonard is my favorite writer. Put those together, this is one of my favorite movies, hands down.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) 5 out of 5
Ten minutes into this movie at the theater, I knew I had to come and see it again. I’ve always been a Mad Max fan and it is the best of all of them. Not just good for the genre, but a good movie, and great social commentary. Worth it and a half.
Glory (1989) 5 out of 5
I saw this in the theater when I was 10 and we decided to watch this as a family. My kids had the same emotional response I did as a kid. We’d been watching Brooklyn 99 lately, and the amazing Andre Braugher had just passed away, so that added to our experience as we watched his first movie.
The Blues Brothers (1980) 5 out of 5
The movie that started it all here at R-Rated Movie Club! Maybe it’s weird that one of my Top 5 movies is one of my first 5 movies. But hey, that’s how I roll.
Your turn!
