A Creeper Story for Halloween Countdown 2025
A cinematic creeper and a scriptural creeper!
Time for a scary movie and scary scripture passage. This week: a creeper story!

Scary Movie: It Follows (2014)
It Follows is a new movie to me. Just saw it last night for the first time, in fact! It lived up to most of the hype, though my spouse and I saw a few plot holes that keeps this one a 3.5 instead of a 4 out of 5 for me (our biggest plot hole is at the end of this entry). Still, it gave me something to think about when it comes to a scary creeper story.
College student Jay Height (Maika Monroe) sleeps with her new boyfriend, who then drugs her, ties her up, and tells her he’s passed on a curse. By sleeping together, now she will be followed by “It.” If It ever gets to her, It will kill her and then come after him again, too, so please stay alive and avoid It. Better yet, sleep with someone else to pass It along to them, and then be sure to tell them about the curse so they’ll pass It on. The more people between you and It, the better your chances of survival.
I know, right? Classic “boy meets girl meets It” scenario!
Throughout the movie, Jay is just fine, but then It gets closer and she has to make a run for it. This haunting It comes at her with no warning. It is relentless. It will not stop. And passing It along to someone else only prolongs the inevitable. At some point, It will get you. Here’s a scene to show what I mean:
The obvious metaphor for STDs aside, It creeps up in Jay’s life like so many other things that hit us without warning: grief, depression, sudden transitions or change, you name it. If we were being honest, we’re all being pursued by some form of It. The truth that comes with It is admitting It.
Scary Scripture: 1 Samuel 18:10-11, 1 Samuel 19:9-10
King Saul liked David when he was a shepherd boy defeating the giant Goliath. He liked David when he played music. He liked David when he supported him and led his armies. But then he did not like David when he got popular. He did not like David when prophets said David would be king. He did not like David when he… well… I mean… well, just look at him!
Better chuck a spear at him!
TWICE!
10 The next day an evil spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he raved within his house, while David was playing the lyre, as he did day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand, 11 and Saul threw the spear, for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David eluded him twice.
9 Then an evil spirit from the Lord came upon Saul as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand, while David was playing music. 10 Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he eluded Saul, so that he struck the spear into the wall. David fled and escaped that night.
Ha! Three times! Psyche!
Saul and David’s love-hate relationship goes back and forth their whole lives (well, for the remainder of Saul’s life, ahem…). They creep up on one another, trying to out maneuver the other in a game of thrones (Oh, that’s what that means!). Here, we have such a chasm of mistrust that both men have to look over their shoulders constantly. So does Jonathan, son of Saul and BFF of David. Stuck in the middle, he goes this way and that, never quite sure what will come his way.
When relationships turn sour, we may end up living with anxiety over what could happen next. Will it get worse? Will they come at me? Will this ever end? It’s a hard feeling to have, and both this triple spear moment in scripture and It Follows personifies this dreadful feeling to excellent effect.
Scary Phobia: Diokophobia and Aichmophobia
You might not like these movies and stories if you have these.
Not a fan of people throwing spears at you? I get it. But if that feeling goes very far, you may have aichmophobia, an intense and/or irrational fear of sharp, pointed objects.
Not a fan of people following you? I hear ya. But if that feeling goes very far, diokophobia is the type of anxiety disorder that can bring significant stress from the fear of being followed, to the point that you can’t really live your life.
I’ve written about a few phobias in these weekly stories in October and I just want to say three things: I am no expert, I do not mention them to be flippant or point fun, and I wouldn’t wish a single phobia on anybody. If you have any of these, peace be with you.
Bonus: It Follows — The Plothole of Plotholes!
The weirdest plot hole of It Follows? How can all of Jay’s friends just… hang out with her all week?! Did they all call out at work? Skip class? I always find it funny when a horror, sci-fi, or fantasy movie asks you to suspend belief for complex situations.
Dragons? With you. Spaceships? Sure thing. Hook hands with a torso full of bees? Sure, as long as it’s Tony Todd.
But a bunch of 20-somethings just don’t go to work or class for a week and can hang out with their creeper-fearing friend? Eh…
Your turn!

The Halloween Countdown continues… is COMPLETE! There will be two more posts next week to wrap up what I watched the last week of October plus one past to wrap them all. I’ve been so grateful to have you along for the ride — THANK YOU!
Glad you’re here today, Dear Reader. God’s peace and good movies to you!
